Cabinet Knob Placement: Drawer and Door Basics

Cabinet knob placement guide banner

Good cabinet knob placement helps a kitchen, vanity or dresser look balanced and makes the hardware comfortable to use. There is no single position for every door style, so start with the cabinet's proportions, door frame and opening direction.

Cabinet doors

On framed doors, knobs are often placed near the opening edge and aligned consistently with related doors. On flat-front doors, the position depends on the size of the panel and the overall layout. Keep the same measurement from corresponding edges across doors that form a set.

Drawers

A single knob is commonly placed near the horizontal centre of a small drawer. Wider drawers may suit a pair of knobs or a pull, depending on the furniture proportions and use. If a cabinet has stacked drawers, align fittings along a shared centreline.

View the whole furniture front

Before marking anything, step back and view the cabinet as one composition. Knobs should relate to drawer edges, rails and neighbouring doors. Review the full arrangement rather than deciding one position at a time.

Make a template before drilling

Measure from consistent reference edges and use a template for repeated positions. Mark all matching doors and drawers before drilling. Check clearances and make sure the hardware will not collide with adjacent doors or nearby fittings.

Replacing existing hardware

Reusing an existing hole can keep a refresh simple. Confirm that the new knob's base covers previous marks and that the screw length matches the panel thickness. Switching from knobs to pulls requires checking the new hole spacing carefully.

Keep style consistent

Decorative knobs can vary by room, but within one continuous furniture run, consistent finish and placement help the result feel intentional. Compare the brass collection and mother-of-pearl collection and check product dimensions before installation.
